Tracking Delta's Retiring 777s

Delta announced plans to retire their 777 fleet relatively quickly after COVID-19 hit, in May 2020. It was later revealed the last public flights would be out of ATL and JFK at the end of October 2020.

On April 5, 2021, a smart flight alert for N705DN revealed that it had been sold, and was scheduled to fly from VCV to MWH. Further investigation revealed N706DN has also been sold to an unknown buyer (both have obscured ownership via Bank of Utah).

Delta's 777 fleet consisted of 18 aircraft; 10 of the relatively unusual 777-200LR (only 61 built), and eight of the more ubiquitous 777-200ER. The 777-200LR was a very impressive aircraft in its own right, and in Delta's fleet they were the only aircraft equipped with the big GE90 engines (the 200ERs have smaller RB-211 Trents).

N864DA arrives at MSP on the evening of September 30th, 2020; it seems this was the last chance to see a Delta 777 in Minneapolis. This aircraft left the fleet on October 5th.

The handful of remaining 777s have been flying LAX-SYD, ORD-FRA, ATL-BOM, and JFK-BOM, as well as miscellaneous military and athletic charters. Strangely, it appears Tampa will end up seeing visits from both variants, as they carry their pro baseball and football teams in coming days.
